High demand from the cleanroom market in the DACH region

A market analysis has revealed the size of the cleanroom market in the DACH region, which is considerable with an existing area of 3.3 million square meters. The demand for cleanrooms remains high and continues to drive growth in the DACH region. In this article, you can find out more about market growth, the areas in which growth is expected and where the most dynamic cleanroom market is located.

Cleanroom sector as a cross-sectional industry

As the cleanroom sector consists of many individual industries, it is a cross-sectional industry. These include, for example, cleanroom planning, cleanroom construction, cleanroom equipment and cleanroom clothing. Until now, there has been a lack of comprehensive data on the cleanroom market, presumably due to this diverse division. The market analysis “The German cleanroom market 2024 (excursus DACH region)” by the market research company Macrom has now closed this gap. According to this analysis, the cleanroom market in the DACH region covers a total of 3.3 million square meters, which is a remarkable size.

Strong growth in the cleanroom market

Industries in which cleanrooms are used, in particular the pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetics and microelectronics sectors, are experiencing growth. In addition, the optics, laser, food, automotive, mechanical engineering and battery industries require ever larger cleanroom areas for their production processes due to stricter quality requirements. These two factors are leading to very positive growth rates in the cleanroom market. The German cleanroom market alone is growing by around 10 percent annually.

The 3.3 million square meters of the cleanroom market in the DACH region can be attributed to the pharmaceutical and medical technology industries in Germany and Switzerland as well as the electronics and microelectronics industries in Germany and Austria. Food production under cleanroom conditions has so far mainly been common in Switzerland and Austria. It is now also experiencing growth in Germany.

The automotive industry is another growth driver for the cleanroom sector, as customers are increasingly demanding that the relevant parts be manufactured under cleanroom conditions. The mechanical engineering industry in Switzerland and Germany is also developing in this direction.

The cleanroom sector benefits from many start-ups that require cleanroom conditions to manufacture their complex products, as well as from the construction of large-scale projects such as large data centers for cloud and AI applications. In Germany in particular, the cleanroom market is also growing due to subsidies for the establishment of companies in the semiconductor industry and e-car production.

Even cannabis is now being produced in cleanrooms, as an example from Switzerland shows, where a production facility with an area of 1,100 square meters was opened two years ago as part of a major project to grow and process cannabis plants.

Germany is the most dynamic cleanroom market

A country-specific analysis of the cleanroom markets in the DACH region shows that Germany has the most dynamic cleanroom market. Germany has taken on a leading role, as many functions such as the planning and construction of cleanrooms, the production of filter systems and the manufacture of wall and ceiling panels are concentrated in Germany. The DACH market for cleanrooms and cleanroom products is more complexly segmented than assumed, with varying market volumes and different development dynamics.

Future prospects for the cleanroom market

According to the article in the trade magazine CHEManager “Cleanroom technology in changing times”, there are three main areas of activity in which there will be the greatest potential for innovation and the greatest demand in the cleanroom sector over the next 10 to 20 years:

  • Energy, environment
  • Automation, digitalization, artificial intelligence
  • Standards, guidelines, state of the art
